Hello friends. It sure has been a while. I apologize for the lack of posts and updates, but alot of exciting things are happening. Let’s get to it!
Lewis knew that it was now or never. He had been practicing for months. Everyone told him to give up his on dream of being a standup comedian, but deep down he knew it was his destiny. This is what he has wanted to do for his entire life. And finally after all these years of working dead-end jobs to make ends meet, he was at his first open mic.Continue reading
It has been a while since I have posted anything and in case you didn’t notice, the podcast was not posted last week. I think it’s time I explain myself…
First let me explain the blog. The last thing I wrote was my review of Captain America: Civil War and since then something happened: Summer. I know, it’s a poor excuse. But the fact remains I haven’t had a lot of time. I have had one of the most eventful summer’s ever, and little time to write about it. I have been on numerous trips, many functions, and of course various cookouts. The little time I have had has been used to either do errands or just relax a bit, and this time is limited. Eventually school is going to kick up a notch and I won’t have much time to do ANY of this, so I feel like I need to take advantage of this time while I can.
But rest assured, I do want to write more. I have some ideas for articles, but they will require some time to research. I also want to get into writing fiction which I may or may not post here (I haven’t decided yet). I hope to improve on my writing this fall with a creative writing class next semester. Hopefully I can find some time to put into this website.
Now to explain the podcast. We were supposed to post an episode of Beyond the Cape last Thursday. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Even worse, I regret to inform you it will be on a bit of a hiatus. We usually have a few episodes back logged so that we don’t fall behind, but due to the schedule restraints from the guests, my co-hosts, and especially myself, we have “caught up” to the end of the episodes we recorded and only have one backlogged. “Why didn’t you post that episode you fucking douche nozzle!?” you might be asking. The answer is pretty fucking lame. My Mac has for some reason decided to be uncooperative. I am not happy about it, especially since it’s very new. I have an appointment this week with the Apple store which will hopefully fix the issue. Not only will I be able to post any back logged episodes, but I will be able to post an entirely new podcast that I think you will all enjoy. I am very proud of it, and some of you may already know the details about it. Keep your eyes peeled.
Sadly my Mac is not the only thing holding up podcast production. The piece of equipment I use to hook the mics into the computer has decided to also stop working. This repair will probably take a little longer because I have to send it off to the company to get it repaired. But rest assured, once I get it back I will go back to producing podcasts for your listening pleasure.
As the saying goes, “Excuses are like assholes: everyone has one, and they all stink”. I truly apologize for the lack of content. Some of it being my fault, some of it not. Either way, it is inexcusable. I hope to start putting more effort into this site again now that the summer is dying down and my schedule is starting to free up. Just writing this makes me realize how much I miss writing.
I want to thank anyone who is reading or listening. Please continue to check back and I will have more blogs and podcasts soon. Thank you all!
I remember it like it was yesterday. It was October of 2014, and I was eagerly awaiting May of the following year to arrive because that was when I would finally see Avengers: Age of Ultron, the much anticipated sequel to my favorite Marvel movie. Nothing could match my excitement… until a little movie called Captain America: Civil War was announced.
I mean, what’s better than a bunch of super heroes teaming up to fuck shit up? Why, a bunch of super heroes beating the shit out of eachother, of course. And with the masterminds behind the amazing Captain America: Winter Soldier returning, how can it fail?
It doesn’t. On any level. This movie is fucking amazing.
If you are unfamiliar with the popular comic arc, here is a quick synopsis: After the events of Age of Ultron, various governments agree that super heroes are too dangerous, and cause more problems than solve. They decide to pass a bill that will “keep super heroes in check”. Tony Stark, feeling the guilt of the destruction of Sokovia, supports the government’s decision. However Steve Rodgers feels that giving the government that much power is a terrible idea. As if this wasn’t enough to make the two allies butt heads, Rodgers’ best friend Bucky (the Winter Soldier) gets caught up in an assassination. Captain America and various Marvel favorites fight against Iron Man and his team of heroes for what they believe in.
Let’s breakdown what makes this movie awesome.
There are a number of new characters in the movie but no doubt everyone is excited to see Black Panther and Spider-Man, and they should be. Both these characters (especially Spider-Man) steal the show. Much like Captain America, Black Panther is just an all around bad ass. Many scenes show him keeping up with the super soldier in both speed and combat.
Though we have seen two interpretations of Spider-Man on the big screen prior to this, Marvel’s Spider-Man is unlike any other. He is extremely young and new, but still a hero at heart. This is the first time Marvel has been able to use Spider-Man (he was previously a property of Sony) and they certainly know how to portray him. One of my favorite things they did was show a superpower that wasn’t quite emphasized before: Spider-Man is fucking strong. I can’t wait to see him in his own movie.
What makes Marvel movies so amazing is they have built their own universe. The first Iron Man movie was awesome, but let’s face it, the part that really got us excited was the post credits scene when it was announced that there were more heroes coming. Since then every movie has usually had a cameo, or even just a mention of another Marvel hero. This movie has more heroes than Age of Ultron (don’t worry though, this movie is very much a Captain America movie, just with a lot of amazing supporting characters). Tony Stark is less smarmy and more sullen, and it might be Robert Downey Jr’s best Iron Man yet. Bucky Barnes is a very central character and we really get to see what an amazing character he is. Though she had a great performance in AOU, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlett Witch really stood out in this movie for me. Though this is only the second time we have seen Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, he absolutely crushes it (in fact he has my favorite line in the movie). Everyone really knocks it out of the park.
The central conflict of this movie is unlike anything the Avengers have faced. Those who once fought next to each other, now fight against each other. Best friends punch each other in the face. It just gets better and better. The airport scene that is shown in the trailer is the highlight of the movie (and a lot longer). As usual the fight scenes are flawless. There were so many times the crowd in the theatre cheered.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
Marvel has been building their universe for 8 years now, and of all their heroes Captain America (who I have to be honest I was the least excited for) gets better with every outting. I can’t wait to see what the Russo brothers do with Infinity Wars… This movie gets my seal of approval.
When one thinks of the scariest characters in movies, certain names come to mind. Freddy Kruger, Jason Vorhees, and Carrot Top to name a few. But recently I watched a movie that had a character that scares the absolute shit out of me. What makes him scarier than almost every character ever, is he exists in real life. That’s right. I was watching a biopic.Continue reading
Today was my 29th birthday. Birthdays can bring about many things. There is usually a party, sometimes there is presents, and those closest to you celebrate your life in various ways. As I started my 29th year on this planet, I felt many different things.Continue reading
We are just hours away from the 90 minute finale of The Walking Dead, and tensions are high. It has been a great season so far and the looming threat of Negan (played by the highly underrated Jeffery Dean Morgan) is upon us. Tonight we finally get to meet him and everyone thinks (knows) that he is probably going to kill someone. Everyone has three predictions, and I have heard a number of them. But ask any TWD fan and they have the same question: Who do you think is going to die? Here are the nominees I have heard.Continue reading
As the late-great David Bowie once said: “Ch- Ch- Ch- Changesssss”. The are some awesome changes coming to Q’s Basement, and I am going to discuss them in this week’s still-yet-to-be-named blog post.Continue reading
Batman and Superman: Two of the most iconic, if not THE most iconic comic book super heroes of all time. It can be argued that they are some of America’s biggest pop culture icons. I think deep down, we all thought we would never see them in a movie together. But our fanboy prayers were answered, and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice graced us with it’s presence. Being a massive Batman fan and huge fan of super hero movies, I was at the earliest showing possible.Continue reading
Last year a trailer for Mavel’s show Daredevil got many people excited. Honestly, I was not one of those people. I know it sounds crazy, given that I clearly love super heroes and have a soft spot for Daredevil, but I had zero faith in super hero TV shows. I figured they would all be terrible, and some of them are (I am looking at you, Gotham). So I honestly had no intentions of even giving this show a chance. But soon after it was added to Netflix, people could not stop raving about it. That’s when I decided to give the show a chance. I was so completely wrong about my prejudgement of super hero shows. This show was AMAZING. I binged it until my eyes hurt, and immediately wanted more.Continue reading
